Sometimes, people clutter up a surface with objects because they hate looking at the underlying surface! Improving the surface, so that you want to look at it, becomes another way to stay organized.
Initially, the kitchen counters in this rental apartment were a stained white vinyl. As a tenant, the renter couldn't install new counters--and so was strategically placing additional, unused kitchen appliances in order to cover the stains! I used inexpensive, completely removable, butcher-block-print contact paper to cover the counters. This project involved characteristic attention to detail, to ensure seamless contouring around the sink and counter edges. When I was finished, however, the kitchen had become a source of pleasure, rather than frustration! P.S. When this tenant's lease was up, the landlord actually requested that the contact paper stay, stating that it improved the value of the rental property!
